The Ultimate Maui Van Life

My experience with this owner during the booking was unacceptable and deeply problematic from start to finish. Communication was unprofessional, dismissive, and at times deceptive. Important information about the vehicle and trip expectations was not clearly disclosed upfront. During the rental period, serious concerns arose regarding privacy and undisclosed recording devices in or around the vehicle, creating major distress for me and my family. When problems arose, the owner repeatedly minimized them instead of taking responsibility. When the refrigerator was not working properly, he attempted to blame me by claiming I had too much food in it rather than addressing the malfunction. He also showed me a knife he kept in the van “just in case,” which was inappropriate and unsettling. In addition, he instructed me to dump the blackwater tank onto a dirt road while driving, effectively encouraging illegal and irresponsible conduct instead of providing lawful disposal instructions. As the trip continued, communication deteriorated completely. When the roof leaked on my daughter overnight she woke up soaking wet on her birthday, he stopped responding altogether and would not acknowledge the issue, answer messages, or make any effort to assist. Being abandoned by the owner while dealing with active vehicle problems during the rental was unacceptable. At no point did I feel properly supported or treated with honesty or professionalism. Instead of addressing legitimate concerns, the owner avoided responsibility and failed to provide the level of service, safety, and transparency expected on the platform. The booking caused lost time, added expenses, major stress, and a complete breakdown of trust. Based on my experience, I would strongly warn others and do not believe this owner met even basic standards of customer care or responsible vehicle hosting.

Eric was an awesome host! This was our first time renting an RV through Outdoorsy, and he made it super easy from start to finish. He took plenty of time to walk us through the Travato, showing us all the cool features and sharing a bunch of great local tips that totally made our Maui trip even better. We also rented the Starlink Mini and had internet everywhere we went — total game changer! The van was spotless, super comfy, and had everything we needed. Eric was so kind and flexible with our drop-off time (we were running late, as usual), which we really appreciated. Honestly, if you’re looking for the best camper van on Maui, this is it — and Eric is hands down the best host out there!
