I proceeded to rent an RV through the Outdoorsy website and wanted to do a walk-through of the RV to see if it would meet our needs, but Chris said that the RV was out and that we could not see it and that other owners do not do it that way either, which I found out later is not true (First Red Flag). Our rental date was a month and ½ away, so this seemed strange and no other dates were blocked out on the website for his RV.
When it came time to pick up the RV, the owner, Chris, did not deliver the RV in person but he sent his friend Anthony instead (Second Red Flag). When we arrived at the Derrell’s mini storage to get the RV, we could not get into the RV storage facility because Chris had not paid rent (Third Red Flag). Anthony then proceeded to pay the bill that day, so we could get in. The next big issue was the RV was absolutely filthy inside and out. There was hair all over the furniture and carpet and the outside was a mess, unlike the information stated in the Outdoorsy pre-check list. Both the Change Oil message light was on and the check ABS indicator was also flashing on the dashboard. I’m thinking, “Is this even safe to travel in?” Anthony called Chris at this point and let him know that we were not happy and Chris said the oil had been changed and everything was mechanically sound. As we proceeded through our walk-through, the cargo area underneath the RV was full of the owner’s stuff. No room for us to put our belongings. We were left with a ½ tank of gas and 1/3 full of gray and black water tanks. Yuck!! Traveling around with someone else’s bio-waste. We told Anthony that we needed to remove Chris’s belongings so we could use the RV we paid for. He helped load all of Chris’s things into the back of his truck. Anthony couldn’t answer many of the questions we had and basically just wanted to leave us the keys and go since he had another appointment! There was no driving instruction, how things worked or any other training except telling us that he had a problem with the A/C when he drove it and the generator. OMG! Really!! Once we got the RV to my home, we spent over 3 hours cleaning, washing and scrubbing so we could load our gear into the RV. The toilet and sink had a horrible and foul smell no matter how much TST septic treatment we used. We had the bathroom fans on the entire trip because of the terrible smell, plus continually spraying Fabreze air freshener all day. The carpets looked like a truck stop with oils stains all over them. One of the bunk bed windows was broken out and boarded up. I thought I was living in an old trailer home. Blinds were missing and curtains were broken that allowed privacy at the RV park. I had to tape paper up over windows and use towels so we could have privacy at night. The RV seemed to drive well, but we noticed several things once we got on the road. The first thing was no working hot water heater. I messaged Chris about this but he was no help and then I tried using the Road Side Assistance tech support line and they walked me through several steps that didn’t work either. They said I could pay someone to come out and look at it, but why is that my responsibility. So we never used the shower because we had no hot water. We had issues with the A/C not working during the hottest part of the day and “SHED” light would come on. We had to leave the RV so we wouldn’t pass out. My poor elderly mother did not do well on this trip because of all of the issues we had. What I thought would have been a great trip for her so she could travel in comfort ended up being the worst decision I had ever made in my life. The next HUGE, “What the heck did I rent” was noticing the expired DVM tags about half way through the trip. The tags and the registration inside the RV both had expired on August 2018. It’s July of 2019, so almost a year out of date (Forth Red Flag). I am so glad we didn’t get pulled over. I sure hope this gets resolved before the next person’s rental occurs and Outdoorsy should be partially help responsible too since they can check driving records. Why can’t they check the DVM registration on the owners renting their RV’s? Dang!! I paid quite a bit of money for a substandard experience and there is NO protection for the renter, only for the owner.
One last and final straw that broke the camel’s back. When it came time to return the RV on the return date, the owner messages me just 30 minutes before it is time to return it that he is running late and that he can’t meet me to get the RV. He said to park it on the side of the road in such and such a location and lock the keys inside. So I never had the opportunity to let the owner know how very disappointed I was and all the things that are completely wrong with this RV. Do not trust the other reviews on the Outdoorsy site for this RV, they might be way out of date because the RV is nothing like the description. No maintenance, lots of issues, and I truly believe this is not road worthy to take on long trips, or even short ones.
I will NEVER rent from this owner or company again. I learned my lesson the hard way. Please rent from a reputable company like CruiseAmerica. They have guarantees and safety precautions in place.

Terra was the perfect family RV for our week long trip to Zion, Grand Canyon and Lake Havasu. There is tons of space for everyone and everything you need to live "on the road".

Great RV, flexible terms. Chris and Oscar made things very easy.

I give this rental five stars, despite some hiccups, because the end result was exactly what we had hoped and the price charged by Chris is dead-on for what you are getting. Renting this RV from Chris is like borrowing your brother's RV, rather than renting from a commercial RV rental center. Chris is very flexible, very accommodating, and very fair. That said, because this is not a commercial RV rental center, you should be prepared to double check things with Chris before you pick up, to make sure the RV has been cleaned, fridge wiped out, systems working, has a full tank of gas, has been serviced recently/oil changed, has batteries in the TV remotes, etc. Like borrowing your brother's RV, there may be things like this that need attending to, and things that are finicky (like the main TV was tricky to get it to work). Once those issues are out of the way, the RV appeared to be in great shape. We drove it for 10 days across multiple states, through the desert in summer, over mountains, and never had a break down. (But we did call roadside assistance once to come help get the auto-leveling system out of error mode, so I recommend purchasing roadside assistance for things that might come up.) To the extent we had issues with anything, we let Chris know about them so that he could take care of those issues and/or alert subsequent renters to those issues. Ultimately, we had a great vacation in the RV with a family of 6 (2 parents, 4 little kids). Parents on the master bed, 2 kids on the bunk beds, one kid on the dinette bed, and a kid in a pack n play (you can fit a pack n play in the rear bedroom area next to the bunk beds, or in the main living area with no problem). There were enough seat belts for everyone to be belted in, including two car seats (although the car seats had to be side facing rather than rear/forward facing). The under-RV storage was plenty for what we needed (which gives this an advantage over Class C RVs). There is a hitch on the back that fits our bike rack, so we could take bikes too.
